The QS World University Rankings by Subject were announced for 2019, and once again, Thermo-Calc is used by a majority of the top 100 universities that specialise in materials science, with 72 of the top 100 schools using our software and databases. Thermo-Calc Software have long supported universities and we are proud to see that so many top universities are choosing to use our software in their materials science programs.
The annual QS World University Rankings by Subject are published by British Quacquarelli Symonds every March and they rank universities around the world in 48 subjects, including Materials Science. This year, the rankings considered more than 15,000 departments from 1200 universities based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. QS also publish a list of the top universities in the world overall every September, which also includes many Thermo-Calc users.
Thermo-Calc Software has deep roots in university which we maintain to this day. The software was originally developed at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, as part of a doctoral thesis project for three students in the department of physical metallurgy. Even as we have grown into a world-leader in our field, we maintain strong ties to universities, providing support to schools in a variety of ways, including offering a free Educational Package to teachers and students for learning computational thermodynamics at an undergraduate level. We also support several summer school programs through teaching, sponsorship and providing free versions of our software and databases. Approximately half of Thermo-Calc users are universities, and we value our partnership with these institutions and are proud to support them.
Congratulations to all the universities who made the list in 2019.
