How to Do a CALPHAD Assessment

People often ask how our thermodynamic and properties databases are developed. The databases contain a tremendous amount of information about the properties of materials and they provide the information needed to complete calculations in Thermo-Calc. A lot of work goes into their development by a team of experts who work continually to expand their functionality and ensure they contain the latest and most accurate information.

To demonstrate how this process works we put together a video. To date, this is one of our most popular videos. Therefore, we want to highlight it again. Watch the video to learn how we develop our thermodynamic and properties databases.

All of the files shown in the video can be downloaded so that you can follow along and complete your own CALPHAD assessment:

Our databases are developed using a process called a CALPHAD Assessment, and the video explains what a CALPHAD assessment is and walks you step-by-step through the process. The assessment involves searching and evaluating all of the literature data, defining a Gibbs energy model depending on its crystal or chemical structure, fitting the model to the data and more.

In the video, we walk through an assessment of the arsenic tin (As-Sn) system to demonstrate how the process works, discussing each step and describing why it is done. You can watch the video and download the calculation files to follow along with your own assessment.
