From Scrap to Steel: Addressing the Challenge of Residual Elements in Recycling

Pont-à-Mousson, France|March 4, 2026

From Scrap to Steel workshop aims at bringing together academics and industry professionals interested in exchanging ideas and research results on residual elements from steel recycling. This conference is co-organized by PEPR DIADEM (France2030) and RNM (Réseau National de la Métallurgie) / SF2M.

The 1-day workshop will feature international keynote lectures, invited presentations from academia and industry, and poster contributions from participants.

Thermodynamic Approaches to Managing Impurities in Steel Production

Speaker: Dr. Nicholas Grundy

Dr. Grundy completed his Ph.D. at ETH Zurich, where he focused on CALPHAD-based thermodynamic assessments and model development for oxide systems used for functional ceramics. He then undertook a postdoctoral fellowship at École Polytechnique in Montréal, working within the FactSage group on thermophysical properties and database development of slag systems. Following his academic work, Nicholas spent ten years in industry as a process metallurgist with SMS group. He joined Thermo-Calc Software AB in 2017, where his primary focus has been advancing the application of Thermo-Calc to ferrous process metallurgy.
