Thermo-Calc Software AB (TCSAB) is a small to medium sized enterprise (SME) that develops computational tools in the field of materials engineering, providing licenses and connected services worldwide to customers in industry, government, and academia. Customers benefit by being able to access faster, cheaper, and more sustainable innovation in the fields of development and production of both materials and components. The company is globally well-recognized in this field by researchers and engineers for its CALPHAD software, such as Thermo-Calc and DICTRA, and several databases. The company’s headquarters and main development office is located in Stockholm, Sweden, where 40 individuals are based, of which approximately 25 hold a Ph.D. from several international universities.

Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH, Germany

The Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH (MPIE) is a legally autonomous research institute that conducts basic research on metallic alloys and related materials. The institute pursues a strong interdisciplinary approach by combining chemistry, physics, metallurgy, and material sciences to develop new high-performance materials for use as high-tech structural and functional components. Complex chemical-physical synthesis, characterisation, simulation, and the link between atomic structure and the properties of materials are included in diverse projects, which are characterised by a highly interdisciplinary approach including close interfacing between experiment and theory.

Helmholtz-Zentrum hereon GmbH (Hereon) is one of the 18 members of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, Germany’s largest science organisation. Hereon is located in Geesthacht near Hamburg with branches in Teltow near Berlin and in Hamburg, with a total staff  of approximately 950 employees, including about 650 scientists, engineers, and technicians.

Activities in the field of materials research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum hereon are focused on development and testing of especially lightweight materials and advanced engineering materials. An overriding goal here is to conserve raw materials and energy resources. The spectrum of activities in materials research ranges from the development of new alloys along with original production and processing methods to the characterization and testing of newly developed materials.

Hereon provides the German Engineering Materials Science Centre. This is a central user access platform, where Hereon offers a worldwide unique infrastructure for complementary research with photons and neutrons. Instruments using synchrotron radiation are operated at the outstation at DESY in Hamburg.

Montanuniversitaet Leoben, Austria

The Montanuniversität Leoben (MUL) is well-known as being one of Austria’s best universities undertaking high-quality research that is focused along the entire “value-added cycle”, starting from the exploration and extraction of raw materials, including mining and tunnelling, via fields such as mineral processing, metallurgy, high-performance materials, mechanical and process engineering, to environmental technology and, to close the circle, the recycling of raw materials. The aforementioned research areas are accompanied by those covering energy technology and resources management, safety engineering and risk management, mathematics, natural sciences as well as economic and business management.

The MUL is strongly committed to integrating the concept of sustainability into the value-added cycle and enhancing the development of high-tech manufacturing and production processes. The university’s various research areas embrace research and development for SMEs and larger scale industry as well as for public institutions. Being the only Austrian university with a major research focus on mining and raw materials, MUL was ranked as the 7th best university worldwide in the materials science sector. The university strongly participates in the initiation and realization of national competence centres, and research studios / laboratories, and moreover, is actively involved in numerous national, European, and international research projects.

At the time of this writing, the university consists of 13 departments and four institutes comprising more than 40 chairs and employing in excess of 1,250 people. Approximately 4,200 students are currently enrolled with approximately 17% being international students coming from 80 different countries.
