Congratulations to the undergraduate engineering departments at Louisiana Technological University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Montana Technological University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, who were selected as the winners of the 2018 ASM Materials Genome Toolkit Contest late last year.
The ASM Materials Genome Toolkit contest has been running annually since 2014 and was set up by the ASM Materials Education Foundation as a way to help undergraduate engineering departments develop and advance the teaching of computational materials design, “an emerging engineering practice deemed essential to the success of the US Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) and global leadership in manufacturing”, according to ASM.
The winning programs each receive a three-year site license for Thermo-Calc software and databases intended to aid in the instruction of computational materials design. The winners were selected by an independent review committee and, according to ASM, “were selected based on how they plan to integrate the toolkit into their undergraduate curriculum and in senior capstone projects designated for the ASM MEF Undergraduate Design Competition.”
Sixteen universities have received the toolkits since the inception of the contest and these undergraduate engineering programs now lead the way in educating future materials engineers in the digital age. In addition to the 2018 winners, previous recipients of the Materials Genome Toolkit are Alfred University, California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, Carnegie Mellon University, Case Western Reserve University, Michigan Technological University, University of Maryland, Missouri University of Science & Technology, Oregon State University, University of Florida, University of Maryland, University of Pittsburgh, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and Wright State University.
